The outdoor marketplace in Shymkent, Kazakhstan is decorated with vibrant colors, cheerful people, and the delightful aroma of freshly baked goods.
"American! American! Picture!" I heard a voice shouting in my direction.
I quickly turned to find a man extending a basket of bread towards me.
"American, picture!" He repeated enthusiastically.
I gazed at him awkwardly, unsure of what he was requesting and slightly bemused by how obvious it must be that I am not a native to the area.
His eyes detoured to the camera resting on my hip.
"This bread like American, take picture!" He almost demanded through his friendly smile.
Laughing, I nodded my head and honored his request. As soon as his mission was complete, he thanked me in Russian and vanished back into the bustling market.
Come to think of it, I didn't even get to taste this "American bread".
But, I’m sure there’s always next time.
